âHeâll like it better if us talks oâ somethinâ else,â said Dickon. âWhat is it thaâs got to tell me?â
âWellâdo you know about Colin?â she whispered.
He turned his head to look at her.
âWhat does thaâ know about him?â he asked.
âIâve seen him. I have been to talk to him every day this week. He wants me to come. He says Iâm making him forget about being ill and dying,â answered Mary.
Dickon looked actually relieved as soon as the surprise died away from his round face.
âI am glad oâ that,â he exclaimed. âIâm right down glad. It makes me easier. I knowed I must say nothinâ about him anâ I donât like havinâ to hide things.â
âDonât you like hiding the garden?â said Mary.
âIâll never tell about it,â he answered. âBut I says to mother, âMother,â I says, âI got a secret to keep. Itâs not a bad âun, thaâ knows that. Itâs no worse than hidinâ where a birdâs nest is. Thaâ doesnât mind it, does thaâ?ââ
Mary always wanted to hear about mother.
âWhat did she say?â she asked, not at all afraid to hear.
Dickon grinned sweet-temperedly.
âIt was just like her, what she said,â he answered. âShe give my head a bit of a rub anâ laughed anâ she says, âEh, lad, thaâ can have all thâ secrets thaâ likes. Iâve knowed thee twelve year.ââ
âHow did you know about Colin?â asked Mary.
âEverybody as knowed about Mester Craven knowed there was a little lad as was like to be a cripple, anâ they knowed Mester Craven didnât like him to be talked about. Folks is sorry for Mester Craven because Mrs. Craven was such a pretty young lady anâ they was so fond of each other. Mrs. Medlock stops in our cottage whenever she goes to Thwaite anâ she doesnât mind talkinâ to mother before us children, because she knows us has been brought up to be trusty. How did thaâ find out about him? Martha was in fine trouble thâ last time she came home. She said thaâd heard him frettinâ anâ thaâ was askinâ questions anâ she didnât know what to say.â
Mary told him her story about the midnight wuthering of the wind which had wakened her and about the faint far-off sounds of the complaining voice which had led her down the dark corridors with her candle and had ended with her opening of the door of the dimly lighted room with the carven four-posted bed in the corner. When she described the small ivory-white face and the strange black-rimmed eyes Dickon shook his head.
âThemâs just like his motherâs eyes, only hers was always laughinâ, they say,â he said. âThey say as Mr. Craven canât bear to see him when heâs awake anâ itâs because his eyes is so like his motherâs anâ yet looks so different in his miserable bit of a face.â
âDo you think he wants to die?â whispered Mary.
âNo, but he wishes heâd never been born. Mother she says thatâs thâ worst thing on earth for a child.
